INTRODUCTION

Viola Odorata is one of the most vital herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. Also known as Banafsha or Sweet-Scented Violet this plant is native to Asia, Europe and North Africa. Other than medicinal purposes this plant is also cultivated for perfume and coloring matter. Rich in numerous chemical constituents Viola odorata contains alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, saponins, terpenes and tannins. In Unani medicine it is used for treating various ailments such as bronchitis, cystitis, fever, respiratory diseases, rheumatism, throat infection, skin conditions and whooping cough due to its antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, emollient, diuretic, diaphoretic and laxative properties. Since Viola is rich in salicylic acid which is also found in aspirin, it is an effective treatment for insomnia, migraine, headaches and even arthritis pain.

This effective plant can also be used for ear disorders including otorrhea since birth and deafness. The flavonoids in this plant treat individuals suffering from high blood pressure. The alkaloids help relax blood vessels thereby allowing the blood to flow smoothly, which helps reduce blood pressure. The saponins and mucilage in this plant work as a soothing expectorant which helps ease bronchial ailments and cough. The leaves and flowers also contain demulcent and expectorant compounds which help relieve chest congestion and thin out mucus. Rich in anti-oxidant properties in the form of ascorbic acid and beta carotene, violet leaves contain vitamin C in the same amount found in four oranges. This enables them to reduce pulmonary inflammation which eases dry cough. Sweet Violet is also ideal for asthmatic patients since it eases respiratory congestion.

Violet flowers are rich in rutin, a compound which strengthens capillaries by preventing leakage from blood vessels. This results in less swelling and pain which makes it potent for those suffering from inflammation. Furthermore, Violet is also known as diaphoretic which makes this herb vital for patients suffering from flu, since it promotes sweating which brings down fever.
